Contraception is used to stop women
becoming pregnant when they have sex...

Contraception works by stopping the man’s sperm from joining with the woman’s egg to fertilise it and starting a pregnancy.  It is important to use contraception carefully and to choose the method that is most suited to you.  If you do not want to be a parent you must use contraception or choose not to have any sex.

All contraceptives except the male condom are used by women.  However, this does not mean that contraception is a woman’s responsibility.  Contraception is the responsibility of both people in a relationship, as sex should be about keeping both of you safe & happy.  Should you have a baby then both of you would be responsible for the child.

By clicking on the following link you will be able to see the different forms of contraception available - and how effective they are. But remember that contraception is only as effective as stated if you are using it correctly!
And don't forget that you can get free condoms from any Choices services.
