EHC

If you have had unprotected sex by not using any form of contraception or that contraception has failed, like a condom breaking, you can still prevent pregnancy by using Emergency Hormonal Contraception or EHC. Many people used to call this the ‘Morning After Pill’ but as it can be taken up to 72 hours after sex has taken place the term EHC is more common now.

But doesn't it make you really ill?

Most people now do not experience any bad symptoms when
taking EHC although it is possible you might feel a little sick.

Is it Expensive?

No, anyone can get EHC free from:

  • Their doctor
  • Family planning clinic
  • Choices Health and Support services.
  • A&E
  • Ward B1 at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital

However some people do choose to purchase an EHC product called Levonelle from their chemist for approx. £25.
In North East Lincolnshire however there is a scheme to provide EHC free in some pharmacies to under 20 year olds.

Things to Remember

If you are in the position where you need EHC perhaps it is time to think about and organise your contraception
in the longer term. All Choices’ services can talk you through this and Choices’ Health and Support can
supply you with the method you need. Also talking this issue through with your partner means you can
then both relax and concentrate on having fun without worry!
