The clitoris, outer and inner lips, urethra, vagina and anus are all part of female genitals.  It can make it easier to understand what all the bits look like if you use a mirror.

Don’t worry if your genitals don’t look exactly like the ones in the picture everyone’s will look slightly different and this is perfectly normal.

The outer lips are technically called the labia majora.  They are hairy on the outside and can often be darker in colour to the rest of your skin.  They may even appear mottled in colour.  The outer lips cover the clitoris and reach back to just in front of the anus.  They are either open or closed and will open when you are sexually excited to reveal the vagina.

The clitoris is a small fleshy bump at the front of your genitals.  It is made where the inner lips (labia minora) meet and it’s there to give you sexual pleasure.

The inner lips are thinner than the outer lips and can vary in colour and size.  They can be light pink to dark brown, one may be bigger than the other or they may hang lower than the outer lips.  None of these things are anything for you to worry about, but if you want to chat to someone about it you can always call in to Choices.

You may have heard of a test for women called a cervical smear.  Your cervix is at the top of your vagina where it meets the neck of your uterus and is tested to look for any changes in the cells.  The test is used to spot any changes before they could lead to cancer.  This test is not routinely offered to people under 25 and while it can be uncomfortable, it won’t hurt and will only take a few seconds.  If you are worried about the test or whether you may need to have one earlier than 25, chat to your GP or someone at Choices.
