Cystitis

An inflammation of the bladder or urethra (tube that connects your bladder to the outside) is called cystitis.  It makes you feel like you need to go to the toilet all the time, even when your bladder is empty.  It may also hurt when you wee.  There are a number of causes of cystitis.  You could have bruised your urethra during sex or heavy petting or transferred germs from your anus (that’s why you’re taught to wipe front to back).  Drinking at least two pints of water a day helps to prevent the infection from occurring.  You will need to see a Doctor or Nurse to get it treated so make an appointment at your GP or drop in at Choices.

Thrush

It’s normal to have a small discharge from your vagina that increases when you are sexually excited or close to ovulation.  It’s usually clear or milky in colour and may turn yellowish when it dries on your pants.  If this discharge changes and becomes thicker and starts to smell or itch you may have an infection called Thrush.  There are a number of different causes of thrush including using perfumed soap, wearing tight jeans or from generally being run down.  It’s easily treated – just pop along to your GP or Choices.

However, if you are having sex, this increased discharge could be a symptom of a Sexually Transmitted Infection which is more serious and you should get checked out as soon as possible either at your GP or by visiting Choices.
